Wheelset development at AC Schnitzer A few definitions first
Wheel/Complete wheel = Rim including tire Wheel set = 4 wheels All-round tires = Tires on front and rear axle are the same The wheels play a truly vital and therefore important role: they are the postcard-sized connection between the vehicle and the road. They are largely responsible for the acceleration and propulsion, as well as for the deceleration – i.e., braking – of your vehicle. The wheels therefore play a key role. Anyone who develops and sells wheels bears a great responsibility. We are aware of this responsibility; we have internalized it and implement it in every new development. At AC Schnitzer, we only use high-quality brand-name tires, developed in close cooperation with premium tire manufacturers. On the one hand, the tires must perfectly transfer the engine's power to the road; on the other hand, properties such as braking performance, lateral stability, water drainage in the rain, and straight-line stability are important decision criteria for or against a tire. A set of wide-base tires is always an investment in increased driving safety and dynamics. To maintain driving comfort when using larger wheel dimensions, we at AC Schnitzer have actively opted against run-flat tires and opted for sporty, conventional tires. Conventional tires create less rolling resistance and offer noticeably more comfort. All AC Schnitzer wheel sets are tuned in multi-stage driving tests on the road and on racetracks. Only after successful test runs are the wheels released for sale. All AC Schnitzer wheel sets are delivered fully assembled and balanced. They are covered by a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Included in delivery are mounting materials such as adapters and wheel bolts, as well as the parts certificate (except for wheel sets marked for export).
Philosophy/Design Technically modern design combined with a high-quality production process characterizes the AC Schnitzer AC4 Flowforming wheel generation, which is available in the sizes 8.5J x 20" and 9.5J x 20", in the color variants BiColor Silver/Black and Black. The all-round undercut reflects the high technical demands of the AC4 Flowforming wheel. This design element is actually only possible if it is machined out during the forging process, as it is located behind the spokes. The undercut of the AC4 Flowforming wheel is particularly visible on the BiColor version, as it reveals the high-quality aluminum with its silver surface.
material Only high-quality aluminum alloys are used. The material is additionally heat-treated during the production process, resulting in increased strength while simultaneously reducing weight. Material samples are taken during the manufacturing process to ensure consistent, high quality.
production The new AC4 flowforming rims are measurably lighter than conventionally cast alloy rims thanks to the production process: the 8.5J x 20" rim weighs just 11 kg, and the 9.5J x 20" rim also weighs just 11.9 kg. The flowforming process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies in the wheel industry. In this production process, after the actual aluminum casting, the raw product is further processed by rolling it out. This step serves to compact the metal, which guarantees greater stability and impact resistance of the rim. On the other hand, the improved stability also allows for even more delicate rim designs, as the wall thicknesses can be significantly thinner than those of conventionally manufactured rims.
Surface Black In this process, the wheel is first primed and then completely painted. A two-layer clear coat is then applied, consisting of a polyester primer and an acrylic clear coat.
Test procedures / safety After their design, the first sample rims are manufactured under real production conditions. These must undergo a multitude of tests. Among other things, their strength is tested. The bending test simulates the "rim lifespan." Every AC Schnitzer rim must survive this lifespan unscathed in order to be produced and sold. Vehicle-specific tests, including test installations with clearance measurements and driving tests on public roads and racetracks, follow. Only after these procedures do our rims receive homologation, i.e., approval for use on public roads. Wheels are safety-critical components. Therefore, they are inspected and tested with the utmost care. This begins with initial chemical material tests and concludes with rigorous endurance tests on test machines: - §30 StVZO wheel guidelines - ECE R124 - Bending tests - 90° impact test - Rolling tests
